My formative years in rural Essex and Cumbria nurtured both my love of the outdoors and a lifelong passion to explore and interpret the landscapes around me through painting. This interest in expressing my surroundings graphically led me to landscape architecture as a career, and although my professional work involved the literal shaping of a wide range of natural and man-made places and environments, it left little time for painting. However, I held my first solo exhibition in Oxford in 2017 prior to moving to Bridport, where I am now immersed in producing new material inspired by the wonderfully varied landscapes of West Dorset.
My outdoor interests take me into many different types of landscape, both inland and coastal, never without binoculars and camera. Each work starts with a series of images captured while I'm out in the open air, which I then interpret in oil paint.
There are 3 gallery sections on the site. The first is images of recent commissions. The second shows images from my current project, ‘A Year on Hardown Hill’. This is one of my favourite haunts and lies between Bridport and Lyme Regis, just inland from Golden Cap. It includes a stunning area of rare lowland heath and has far-reaching views across Lyme Bay to the south and extending as far as Somerset to the north.
The third is a selection of paintings, most of which were exhibited at my first solo exhibition in Oxford, 'Reflections on Landscape', drawn from paintings completed over the last four decades. These represent my personal response to the wide variety of landscapes that have inspired me over the years.
I am continuing to undertake commissions and work on my Hardown Hill series. I will be exhibiting some paintings from that series in the Lyme Bay Arts ‘Spring into Art’ members-only exhibition at the Sou'-Sou'-West Contemporary Arts Gallery in Bridport running from 12th April to 3rd May (subject to covid restrictions). The exhibition will be gradually going online from 14th March. Details at: Lyme Bay Arts – Bringing art to life! I also hope to be able to hold an exhibition of the whole of my Hardown Hill series of paintings sometime in 2021, however covid restrictions are currently making forward planning very difficult.
