My formative years in rural Essex and Cumbria nurtured both my love of the outdoors and a lifelong passion to explore and interpret the landscapes around me through painting. This interest in expressing my surroundings graphically led me to landscape architecture as a career, and although my professional work involved the literal shaping of a wide range of natural and man-made places and environments, it left little time for painting. However, I held my first solo exhibition in Oxford in 2017 prior to moving to Bridport, where I am now immersed in producing new material inspired by the wonderfully varied landscapes of West Dorset.
My outdoor interests take me into many different types of landscape, both inland and coastal, never without binoculars and camera. Each work starts with a series of images captured while I'm out in the open air, which I then interpret in oil paint.
There are 3 gallery sections on this site. The first is images of recent commissions. The second shows images from my most recent project, ‘A Year on Hardown Hill’. The hill is one of my favourite haunts and lies between Bridport and Lyme Regis, just inland from Golden Cap. It includes a stunning area of rare lowland heath and has far-reaching views across Lyme Bay to the south and extending as far as Somerset to the north.
The third is a selection of paintings, most of which were exhibited at my first solo exhibition in Oxford, 'Reflections on Landscape', drawn from paintings completed over the last four decades. These represent my personal response to the wide variety of landscapes that have inspired me over the years.
Following my successful exhibitions of the completed paintings from A Year on Hardown Hill at the Sou'-Sou'-West Contemporary Arts Gallery at Symondsbury and Artyfacts in Bridport, my next solo exhibition will be in the Rotunda at Lyme Regis Museum; Portraits of Golden Cap is scheduled to run from 17th January to 5th March 2023. Details to follow.
